What’s in a name? (Zdiar is pronounced ‘Sdeeaar’)
Sharing an interest in travelling also inspires much of the music of Zdiar – indeed the name comes from a small village in The Czech Republic where the first Zdiar musical ideas were developed.
Ralf Seidel
Ralf is a very good synthesizer programmer, plug-in twiddler, sample editor and drum machine. He sits up all night for 2 or 3 days just to get that string sound just right. Some guy! He is also in search of his Holy Grail – the ultimate bass drum sound. Ralf has a fine ear for composition and arrangement and is a also a very adept engineer/producer and knob twiddler. Although he can play keyboards Ralf prefers to concentrate on the engineering, production, sound creation and programming activities. If it involves lots of knob twiddling and fine tuning Ralf is the man for the job.
Brian Johnstone
Brian was a late starter on piano starting at the grand old age of 16 taking ‘proper’ lessons from a real teacher. In an attempt to be the next Keith Emerson he made sure he at least had a go at a variety of musical styles, including rock, funk, classical, jazz, boogie etc drawing influences from all areas of music. Brian prefers to ‘play’ in Zdiar (even the complicated bits, if there are any) and arrange the music and has a peculiar fascination with trying to sound like a guitarist but using a piano keyboard.
Guest Musicians in Zdiar
Des MacFarlane
Apart from having a superb voice and being an excellent singer Des is formally qualified in Musical Performance having studied at Perth College in Scotland. He has many years of singing experience in several bands and is not ashamed to admit that he loves Karaoke. He has a great ability to copy many other people and his ‘tarantella’ is performing the BBC’s version of Perfect Day and impersonating all the singers himself.
Euan Lowson
After a short but eventful career with Scotland’s (and indeed one of the worlds) best prog rock bands, Pallas, Euan and Brian worked together in 90′s Glasgow prog band The Rising. Although we have no blood, infinity tunnels and castrations in Zdiar Euan still does a great job with an inimitable vocal style/delivery and unique distinctive voice.
